British Values at Clifton Primary School

At Clifton Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children to become confident, responsible and respectful members of modern British society.

Fundamental British Values are an important part of our school ethos and are closely linked to our own values of Respect, Determination, Care and Unity. They are embedded throughout our curriculum, assemblies, everyday routines and the many opportunities we provide for children to develop their understanding of the world around them.

The Department for Education identifies four fundamental British Values:

  • Democracy

  • The Rule of Law

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

We actively promote these values through meaningful learning experiences, pupil leadership opportunities and our commitment to creating an inclusive school community where everyone feels valued and respected.

Democracy

We believe that every child should have a voice and understand that their opinions matter.

Our elected Class Representatives provide opportunities for pupils to participate in democratic processes, represent the views of their classmates and contribute to decisions about school life.

Across the curriculum, children are encouraged to share their ideas, listen to different perspectives, debate respectfully and participate in voting and decision-making activities. Through these experiences, pupils begin to understand how democracy works and the importance of having a voice in their community.

The Rule of Law

At Clifton, we help children understand why rules and laws are important in keeping people safe, protecting individual rights and ensuring fairness.

Our school expectations are rooted in our values and promote positive behaviour, responsibility and respect for others. Children learn that their actions have consequences and that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to a safe and supportive environment.

Through our curriculum, assemblies and visits from members of the wider community, including the emergency services, pupils develop an understanding of the role of laws and the people who help keep our communities safe.

We celebrate children who demonstrate positive behaviour, make responsible choices and consistently uphold our school values.

Individual Liberty

We encourage our pupils to develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of personal responsibility.

Children are supported to make informed choices, express their opinions and understand their rights and responsibilities within a safe and nurturing environment.

Through Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, online safety lessons and wider learning opportunities, pupils explore how to exercise their freedoms responsibly, respect the rights of others and make safe choices both online and offline.

We aim to empower every child to develop their own interests, recognise their strengths and have the confidence to contribute positively to school life and the wider community.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Respect is one of our core school values and underpins everything we do at Clifton.

We are incredibly proud of our diverse school community, which reflects the rich cultural, religious and linguistic diversity of Southall. We see this diversity as a strength and an important opportunity for children to learn from one another.

Through Religious Education, assemblies, visits to places of worship, cultural celebrations and our wider curriculum, children develop an understanding and appreciation of different religions, cultures, traditions and beliefs, including those of people who do not follow a religion.

We teach children that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness and fairness, regardless of their background, faith or beliefs. Pupils are encouraged to celebrate differences, challenge stereotypes and recognise the importance of equality and inclusion.

Our aim is for every child to feel a strong sense of belonging while developing the understanding and respect needed to live harmoniously in a diverse society.

British Values in Everyday School Life

At Clifton, British Values are not taught in isolation. They are woven into the experiences and opportunities we provide for our pupils, including:

  • Our broad and balanced curriculum.

  • Assemblies and opportunities for reflection.

  • Class Changemakers and pupil voice activities.

  • PSHE, Religious Education and online safety lessons.

  • Visits, educational experiences and community partnerships.

  • Celebrations of different cultures, faiths and traditions.

  • Our behaviour expectations and recognition of school values.

We actively challenge discrimination, prejudice and extremist views, while encouraging children to ask questions, think critically and discuss different perspectives respectfully.

Through our commitment to ‘Aspire to Achieve’, we aim to equip every pupil with the knowledge, values and confidence to make a positive contribution to their community and to life in modern Britain.
