We are very lucky to live so close to the canal. There are some things for you to remember about the canal to keep safe:

  • Stay away from the edge
  • Never walk over frozen water
  • Refuse to swim in the canal, even if someone is telling you to do so
  • Do not play with your friends by the canal
  • The water in the canal is not for drinking

Hidden dangers

Under the water there are dangers that you cannot see such as;

- rubbish which can be sharp

- hidden and slippery edges

- very cold water

- very deep water

- ice

Falling in

If you fall into the canal you should;

- Try to stand up

- Try to get as close to the edge as possible

- Call for help

If you see someone has fallen into the canal you should;

- Tell them to try to stand up

- Tell them to swim to the edge

- Call for help

- Do not try to pull them out as you might slip in too

- Look for a life ring, if you find one try to put it in the water (it will be heavy so do not chuck it as you may fall)
